Croatia has been the meeting point of empires for two thousand years — Roman, Byzantine, Venetian, Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian, Yugoslav. The walls of Dubrovnik and the palace of Diocletian in Split are postcards. The Dalmatian islands and the inland villages are not.
